Marvel Studios named the cast of its X-Men film on stage at D23 in Anaheim on 14 August. Sadie Sink leads as Jean Grey, Jake Schreier directs, and the film, still untitled, is dated for 5 May 2028.
Who is in the X-Men cast?
Seven actors were announced. Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey and Kit Connor plays Scott Summers, Cyclops. Christopher Abbott is Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette is Rogue and Maya Boyd is Storm. Adam Driver, who appeared by recorded video, plays Nathaniel Milbury, the human identity several outlets have tied to Mister Sinister; TheWrap reports Kevin Feige describing Sinister as pivotal to a story centred on Jean. Feige later called the line-up "a very young, new cast", which is the point. Forbes thought Maya Boyd the biggest surprise of the group; the A.V. Club admitted it would not have jumped to Driver for a Victorian mad scientist, but found the choice hard to argue with once made.
Who is behind the camera?
Schreier comes to it from Thunderbolts*. The script is credited in most reporting to Lee Sung Jin, creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo of The Bear; accounts differ on whether Michael Lesslie, who worked on an earlier draft, keeps a credit. Driver recorded his video on a soundstage at Pinewood, and Rotten Tomatoes reports that filming there is due to begin soon, though Marvel has not announced a start date.
Who has not been cast yet?
Wolverine, Beast and Magneto. Feige indicated that more casting will follow, and the only addition since has been reported rather than confirmed: TheWrap says Asa Germann of Gen V is in final talks to play Angel. The names attached to Magneto and Beast online remain speculation, and we have left them there.
How does it connect to Avengers: Doomsday?
Before this cast arrives, the older one returns. Avengers: Doomsday, due on 18 December, brings back Fox's X-Men: Ian McKellen as Magneto, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, all confirmed in March 2025. The new team is expected to be introduced properly after Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027. Whether any of them appear in that film is not confirmed, and nor is any story link to the Fox films or to X-Men '97.
Save the date
5 May 2028 is the US date; a UK date has not yet been given. Between now and then sit two Avengers films and, on Feige's own reckoning, a long runway: "There's been 10 great X-Men movies," he said at D23, "[but] there can be 100 more."
